IPIF2024 | Green Revolution, Policy first: New trends in packaging policy in Central Europe

China and the EU have been committed to responding to the global trend of sustainable economic development, and have carried out targeted cooperation in a wide range of areas, such as environmental protection, renewable energy, climate change and so on. The packaging industry, as an important link, is also undergoing unprecedented changes.

Relevant departments in China and Europe have issued a series of policies and regulations aimed at promoting the innovation, environmental protection and intelligent development of the packaging industry, which also makes the packaging industry face more and more challenges brought by laws and regulations. Therefore, for Chinese enterprises, especially those with overseas trade plans, they should actively grasp the environmental policy framework of China and Europe, so as to adjust their strategic direction in line with the trend and gain a favorable position in international trade.

Many places in China have issued new policies, and it is imperative to strengthen packaging management

The introduction of industry policies at the national level to support and guide is an important driving factor for sustainable packaging development. In recent years, China has successively promulgated the “Green Packaging Evaluation Methods and Guidelines”, “Opinions on Accelerating the Establishment of Green Production and Consumption regulations and policy System”, “Opinions on Further Strengthening the control of plastic pollution”, “Notice on Further Strengthening the control of excessive packaging of commodities” and other policies.

Among them, the “Restrictions on excessive packaging of goods requirements for food and cosmetics” issued by the General Administration of Market Supervision was formally implemented on September 1 this year after a three-year transition period. However, there are still many related enterprises in the spot check was judged as unqualified packaging void ratio, excessive packaging although can enhance the attractiveness of the product, but it is a waste of the environment and resources.

Let us look at some of the current innovative packaging materials and application cases, you can find that beauty and environmental protection can be taken into account. In order to provide a platform for upstream and downstream users of the industry to learn and exchange, the IPIF 2024 International Packaging Innovation Conference hosted by Reed Exhibitions Group invited the National Food Safety Risk Assessment Center, Ms. Zhu Lei, director of the Food Safety Standards Research Center, the relevant leaders of DuPont (China) Group and Bright Food Group and other industry leaders from the policy side and the application side. Bring cutting-edge design concepts and technological innovations to the audience.

In the EU, packaging waste has no place to hide

For the EU, the core objectives aim to strictly limit the amount of plastic packaging waste, improve safety and promote a circular economy by reducing, reusing and recycling packaging.

Recently, many consumers have found an interesting new phenomenon, when buying bottled drinks, they will find that the bottle cap is fixed on the bottle, which is actually because of the requirements of the “Single-use Plastics Directive” in the new regulation. The directive requires that from July 3, 2024, all beverage containers with a capacity of less than three liters must have a cap fixed to the bottle. A spokesperson for Ballygowan Mineral Water, one of the first companies to comply, said they hoped the new fixed caps would have a positive impact on the environment. Coca-Cola, another international brand that dominates the beverage market, has also introduced fixed caps in all of its products.

With the rapid changes in packaging requirements in the EU market, relevant local and overseas companies should be familiar with the policy and keep pace with The Times. The IPIF2024 main forum will invite Mr. Antro Saila, CEO of the Finnish Packaging Association, the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China, Mr. Chang Xinjie, Chairman of the Environmental Working Group and other experts to the site to give a keynote speech, to discuss the layout planning of brands and packaging companies for the future sustainable development strategy.
